Narcissists are often described as popular, charming, or successful. During arguments, some narcissists use these traits against you.

“Nobody will believe what you’re saying if you leave. I run a nonprofit and am close to my family. Everyone likes me. You don’t have any real friends.”

Overt narcissists love making claims like this, and so do abusers. Fortunately, you may be able to recognize that these statements are a red flag and react accordingly.

Recognizing a covert narcissist isn’t as easy. Covert narcissists, also known as closet narcissists, are often introverts. They may not have a huge circle of friends or delight others with their witty jokes at parties. Instead, they destroy lives quietly, opting for passive-aggressive actions and subtle manipulation.

Covert narcissists pretend they’re alone

Overt narcissists often brag about their support system. Covert narcissists claim they have nobody. Their parents are abusive, exes are jerks, and friends are unreliable.

Bosses and coworkers take advantage of them. Neighbors are awful. Doctors ignore their medical concerns or provide subpar treatment. Nobody is ever there…
