Thanks for the Computer, Grandpa

And thanks for being you

I went to a Title I school. If you don’t know what that is, be thankful.

I was a straight A student and in the gifted program, so my family expected perfection. They decided I needed a computer for school, but we couldn’t afford one.

Grandpa Paul was happy to help. On my birthday, he surprised me with a new computer and printer. This was a major blessing. Back then, computers were thousands of dollars, or so I was told. Grandpa Paul was always a generous man.

He was blind, but he didn’t let his vision impairment keep him down. He was a spunky fellow. I still remember a conversation he had with my grandma.

“Helen, you better not be dressing me in pink again,” Grandpa Paul joked.

“Of course not,” Granda Helen said, winking. “This shirt is a beautiful shade of dusty rose.”

Grandma was a firecracker, too.

Can you tell a story in 150 words or less? I decided to try after learning about Oren Cohen’s 30 Day Medium Writing Challenge — today is day #5 for me. Today’s prompt was “let’s write about a family member that changed our lives.”
