My concussion destroyed my sleep schedule.

Desperate for relief, I visited my neurologist. Propranolol — the med he claimed I’d love — made things worse.

I started waking up every 20 to 30 minutes courtesy of my Propranolol. Turns out sleep disturbances are a common side effect associated with Propranolol and other beta blockers. Propranolol suppresses melatonin, which makes it harder to get quality sleep.

My doctor didn’t tell me any of this, though a nurse later confirmed my research. Shout out to Google for always being there for me.

Happy I had a possible culprit in mind, I figured my sleep problems would improve after discontinuing Propranolol. The med has a short half life, so you can expect it to be out of your system in 1 or 2 days. My body does what it wants, so I figure I’d need a couple of months rather than a couple of days.

Four months later, I was still struggling to sleep through the night, although now I was waking up every hour instead of every 20 minutes. My doctor suspected sleep apnea and referred me to a sleep specialist. I appreciated the referral, but I needed some relief in the meantime.
