I’m quick to complain about toxic relationships, but I’ve had some great ones too. I thought about this as I stood at the bus stop with my kids today, shivering as a fall breeze sent leaves floating to the ground.

I used to be the opening manager at McDonald’s, which meant my arrival time was 4 a.m. It was rough, especially since my toddler had to be dropped off at a sitter first.

I hated the winter because it meant I had to wake up extra early to warm up my car before work. I lived on the top floor of a condo, and it took some time to get out to the parking lot and find my vehicle.

One morning, my boyfriend decided to surprise me by warming up my car even though he had worked until midnight. That act of kindness has stuck with me for 15 years.
