I’ve Earned $100 From an Article With 160K Views

How did this happen?

“I keep seeing you on Facebook!” my friend mentioned excitedly.

“Yeah, I know. I spend way too much time on there.”

“No,” she said. “That’s not what I meant.”

That’s when I realized my article about a social media trend involving senior pics went viral. I published a 3-minute rant in mid April about the trend figuring I’d get a couple hundred views and a few bucks. A month later, I’ve raked in nearly $100 from 161,000 views.

But is that good or bad?

There are Medium writers who don’t earn $100 from their entire collection of work, let alone $100 from a single article. I know this because I follow Medium Blogging Guide, a helpful publication managed by Casey Botticello. Thanks to Casey, I’m aware that just 5.4% of active Medium writers earn more than $100 per month.

But is $100 really a decent amount for an article with 161,000 views? That equals $0.00062 cents per view. As the former owner of a food blog, I realize that amount is super low. However, I’m still happy with it at Medium.

Things are different at Medium. You can’t compare it to other sites.
