I can relate to this. I also hate how people assume that if you have a specific struggle once, you'll have it forever.

When I first joined Medium, I wrote an article about my childhood depression, including how I tried ending my life at age 8. Childhood mental illness is a subject that isn't talked about often enough in my opinion.

Anyway, this article was used against me during my custody battle. My ex's attorney asked if I was a suicidal, unstable adult and cited my article as evidence. Keep in mind I was in my mid 30s during my custody battle and no longer had depression - just anxiety, which I was treated for regularly, and some other minor medical concerns which were also treated.

My ex knew this, and it makes me sick that he felt it was appropriate to throw my childhood problems at me during court. I'm more cautious what I say online now, which is a shame because I think healing from mental illness or any traumatic experience is easier when you talk about your symptoms and struggles with others. It also helps reduce the stigma.
